When’s the Right Time to Bring in an Interior Designer? (It’s Sooner Than You Think)

I’ve had some similar conversations lately with homeowners who waited to bring in a designer, when big decisions like layouts, electrics, or decorating were already done. They were unaware that a designer could help them with those early planning decisions. The truth is, getting a designer involved earlier can save you a huge amount of time, money, and stress, and avoid those “I wish we’d thought of that sooner” moments (which we are often brought in to fix/ undo)

Don’t wait until all the overwhelming & all important decisions have been made…

It’s common for people to reach out once the builders have finished, or when key things like kitchen layouts and other big purchases are already decided. But by that point, a lot of the most important decisions have already been made.

From experience, the best results happen when a designer is brought in early, ideally before work begins. That way, there’s a clear plan guiding the design, from lighting, socket placement, flooring and material finishes, overall flow of rooms and lovely finishing details that create impact.

I’ve worked with clients who had already invested heavily into spaces that didn’t quite work for how they lived simply because the design wasn’t considered from the start.

Bedroom and Bathroom Concept Design

Input early on makes all the difference to elevating your interior

(& helps with decision overwhelm, once the build is underway)

When to get me involved - Every project is different, but here’s what tends to work best:

Planning, Layout, Concept

As soon as you start thinking about a renovation or are assigning an architect to rework a space, that’s the ideal time.

This is where the design ideas take shape, a plan is formulated and everything starts to feel more considered.

Working Alongside Contractors

I can collaborate with the builder, joiner, electrician, to make sure details align, avoiding awkward layouts or poorly placed lighting ( a biggie if you want to have soft ambient lighting as well as the ‘big light’ or glaring spot lights.)

Sourcing the Right pieces, Styling & Finishing Touches

Once the main work is done, I bring everything together, furniture, fabrics, artwork, colour so the space feels cohesive and complete.

Interior design is often considered later, when homeowners feel stuck on paint colours or what furniture to pick. But in short: the earlier I’m involved, the smoother the process.

What Does It Cost?

Costs vary depending on the level of support, but here’s a rough guide:

 • Consultation (focused sounding board): £325 (with follow-up)

 • Consultation & design packages: from £1,400

 • Full-service design: from £bespoke

 • Space planning: from £600

 • Accessories & styling: from £600

Everything is tailored depending on what you actually need, whether that’s a bit of guidance or full support from start to finish. Getting advice early can often save money by avoiding costly mistakes.

The aim is always to make the process feel straightforward (and even enjoyable)..

rather than overwhelming.

What I Do…

I’m based in Nottingham and work across a mix of home, from period properties to more modern spaces.

I love blending old and new to create homes that feel personal, practical, and lived-in, that reflect you. Creating interiors that are thoughtful, practical, and full of personality - always with a cohesive flow to connect your home. For me, it’s not just about how a space looks, but how it feels and how it works day to day.

Final Thoughts

If you’re wondering when to bring in a designer, it’s earlier than you think. At the time you are also hiring an architect an a builder. Having someone to guide those practical and creative decisions from the beginning makes everything feel more aligned and a lot less stressful.
